THE BAUMGARDT FAMILIES

In America, there are 3 or 4 different Baumgardt families. As far as can be determined, the different families are unrelated, and arrive from errors in spelling when the families were either in the old country, or when they immigrated to America, the more common spellings of the name being Baumgart, Baumgarten, or Baumgard. The families originate from Sweden, one family of Jewish descent, and from the Hesse and Prussian regions of Germany.

The entomology of the name derives from our humble roots. "Baum", German for "Tree", and "gard", German for "gardiner", is a common German phrase denoting a large class of workers in wood, tree choppers, barrel stave makers, and the like.

MY ANCESTORS

(1) According to family tradition, the origins of the family date back to the East Prussia State - a man named Von Spachus, in Labiau, East Prussia, was a burgermeister in the town. He did something that was so horrible that he was thrown out of town, and forced to change his name and stay in hiding. Being largely illiterate, he misspelled the conventional spellings of the name, and used a rare varient that only appears in this line and a few others. He began a woodchopper, making oak staves for barrels, for which he was paid 20 cents a barrel. One hot day, he was suffering from heat prostration, and died while drinking a cold beer. They had children Frederick, Martin, Christian, August, Henrietta, and Wilhelmina.

(2a.) Frederick John Baumgardt, born on 6/23/1867, worked in a coal mine in Essen, Germany before he came to America. He emigrated on the boat "Zweiland" (Sealand), which docked in New York City in April 1892 - on Easter Sunday. He worked his passage to America with a Polish fellow by coal passing on the boat. When they reached America, they slept in a flophouse. They then went to a tavern, where the bartender spke German, who helped them to get farming jobs in Packensack, New York, where they received room and board and $15.00 a month. They worked there for about a year, and then relocated to Wilmington Delaware where the Polish fellow had relatives. Frederick boarded with the Nichols family there, and fell in love with their daughter, Anna. They were married in Wilmington, Delaware, on 2/3/1899. He worked as a painter, including painting the Todd's Cut Bridge in Wilmington, and later as a taylor for Mr. Bullen, mending coats at $1.00 each at Mullin's Store in Wilmington. Biography of Dan Baumgardt: I grew up in a northern suburb of Milwaukee called Brown Deer. Since I was a young one, I was always interested in severe storms and tornadic activity. This "fear of God" as well as an interest in the power of Mother Nature led me to Madison where I pursued my degree in meteorology. While there, I researched the environment which formed a violent tornado in northern Illinois in 1990 - the Plainfield Illinois tornado which killed 28 people. During my graduate student years, I also was a teaching assistant for many department classes - this was a great time! In 1992, I graduated from UW-Madison with my Bachelor's (actually 1990) and Master's Degree and then moved to Salt Lake City. I moved to SLC to begin work with the National Weather Service in the Western Region Headquarters in the Scientific Services Division. There, my main mission was to support NWS field operations (forecasters) in the West - mainly through science and technological support (i.e., firefighting). I then moved into a forecaster position at the National Weather Service Salt Lake City office. My time there was very rewarding as it was the first time a weather radar had covered the region. I also taught introductory meteorology at the University of Utah a few semesters. In 1995, my wife and I moved back to the Badger State and now are much closer to family. It is also rewarding to "give back" to the area you were raised. My wife is currently the Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters here in La Crosse and some of my interests include skiing out West, storm chasing, all sports, duck hunting, spending time with friends, and music. Biography of Michael Baumgardt, author of Adobe Photoshop 6.0 Web Design.: Where do I start here? The beginning is probably the easiest: I was born September 12, 1966 in Berlin, but I grew up partially in South Africa and Saudi Arabia. So even though I am German, I like to think of myself more as a cosmopolitan. One of the things that [I'd like to do] is to live all over the world, but for now I live in New York, my favorite city of all. I moved here from Boston where I studied music at the Berklee College of Music. There was even a little episode prior to New York, where I lived in Montreal for six months, because I had fallen terribly in love with a French Canadian woman. But as much as I enjoyed the people there, it just wasn't meant to be. My family still lives in Germany, and since I am still very close to many of my friends in Munich, I go there at least twice a year. In that respect, it is certainly great to be a book author, because I can pack my bag and write anywhere in the world. Usually, though, I just take my laptop to Central Park. In my spare time I go rollerblading or do all kinds of water sports (my favorite sport is flip diving; I trained professionally for six years). Other than that, I do pretty much anything that is crazy, from snowboarding to bungee jumping.

Julius Henry “ Jay” Baumgardt , 47 Years Old, July 5, 1947 to June 23, 1994. Jay Baumgardt, of Lindenhurst, New York, was a loving husband; his wife's best friend and soulmate. He was a great dad and a special friend to his children. Jay would listen to anything they had to say - they could go to him with any of life's hurdles and he would guide them to reach their own choice in life. He had all of the answers. He was a loving grandpa to his two "boys" and was waiting for all the new grandchildren that were to come into his life so he could spoil them and teach them about the wonders and gifts from above. Jay loved to try weird foods and loved to cook. He enjoyed fixing cars and working around the house. Jay was looking forward to starting a small trucking business with his son. He believed the greatest thing you could have in life wasn't a fortune, but having the wealth of his loving family and friends. Jay is truly missed and will be remembered by all forever. Jay Baumgardt, 47, of Lindenhurst, New York, left home on the morning of June 23, 1994, at 7 am. At 11 am that day he was shot dead during a payroll robbery at his place of work. He did not resist. He was forced to lay face down on the ground; his partner was handcuffed and Jay was shot in the back of the head. He died instantly. The case is unsolved.

Bill Baumgardt, Professor of Agriculture at Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, upon his retirement: Baumgardt has worn many hats during his career - researcher, animal scientist, administrator, agricultural spokesman and church leader. After Feb. 1, you can add the hat that says ''retired.'' As associate dean and director of Agricultural Research Programs at Purdue, Baumgardt provides leadership to 272 faculty with research expenditures of $45.5 million. “As a scientist and administrator of people and public funds, he has always demonstrated the highest level of integrity and commitment to excellence,” said Edward L. Veenhuizen, past president of the Purdue Council on Agriculture, Extension and Teaching. Jack L. Albright of the Indiana Commission of Farm Animal Care said: “Bill is a tireless, unselfish, state-of-the-art person. He epitomizes what the Certificate of Distinction represents by recognizing service to Indiana and our nation's agriculture above and beyond the call of duty.” Baumgardt earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Purdue and a Ph.D. from Rutgers in 1959. He came to Purdue in 1980 from Penn State University, where he was professor of animal nutrition, head of the department of dairy and animal science and associate director of the agricultural research station and associate dean for research. “Bill has been a strong advocate for the land-grant university system and its agricultural research and education programs,” said Charles R. Krueger, agronomy researcher at Penn State. ''He has articulated convincingly the important role these programs have made to improving the agricultural industry of the United States for the benefit of all its citizens.” Baumgardt is a past president and director of the American Dairy Science Association. The group honored Baumgardt in 1993 with its Award of Honor and again in 1997 by naming him a Fellow of the association. “Bill grew up on a dairy farm,'' recalled H.L. Thacker, director of the Purdue Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratories. “He has not forgotten his roots. He has shown remarkable dedication to honoring those roots through service to the agricultural community of this state.”

Justi Baumgardt, 28, has achieved almost everything as a player in women's soccer and coaching was a way to stay productive during her professional offseason. Baumgardt was named two-time national high-school player of the year at Federal Way High School (1992, '93), played collegiately at Portland (1993-97), earned a spot on the U.S. women's team (1993-99) and has played four years of professional soccer (2000-2003). "It's sad we only have one year with her," said Ashlyn White, one of two Eagles senior co-captains who moved from forward to center midfield position. "I think we all as players look up to her. We understand we all can't be like Justi. She was rare. There's only going to be one Justi, especially at Federal Way. “But we all want to prove ourselves to her. I've learned so much in a month of soccer with her. She sees things on the field in practice that we'd never see." It's as if her players sense her desire to win, although Baumgardt mainly stands quietly on the sideline during games. "I try not to overcoach and yell," said Baumgardt, who celebrated her two-year wedding anniversary with former Portland assistant Tote Yamada yesterday. "I want to make an environment where players can go out and play for fun. That's what Clive taught me. The games were to have fun." (“Woman’s Soccer Standout Returns to Federal Way, Seattle Times, October 14, 2003)
